PrideUp at Productsup: Get to know our LGBTQ+ employee resource group PrideUp at Productsup: Get to know our LGBTQ+ employee resource group

In celebration of Pride Month, we’re spotlighting PrideUp, our LGBTQ+ employee resource group (ERG), and the incredible impact it's made across Productsup. We sat down with Christian Berkemeier, one of the founders and leaders of PrideUp, to reflect on the group’s journey, the importance of visibility, and what it means to foster a truly inclusive workplace.

Introducing PrideUp at Productsup

  • Can you tell us about your role in the LGBTQ+ ERG at Productsup?

Christian: As the founder and leader of PrideUp, I work closely with my leadership team to grow our ERG, launch impactful initiatives, and address ongoing challenges. I’m proud to have so many enthusiastic colleagues who bring their ideas to life and actively support our mission.

  • What inspired you to take the lead in this group?

Christian: Diversity and equality have always mattered to me. From day one at Productsup, I saw these values in action. When we discussed how to go even further, I jumped at the chance to create a dedicated group focused on LGBTQ+ topics to educate, build community, and yes, have fun along the way.

  • What kinds of initiatives or events has the ERG organized in the past year?

Christian: We began with educational campaigns that explored key LGBTQ+ topics. For instance, breaking down what each letter in LGBTQ+ stands for. We’ve hosted two panel discussions featuring internal and external speakers.

  1. The first session focused on real stories, highlighting both the challenges and triumphs of a trans woman.
  2. The second session was about the history of AIDS and the current global context.

Both panels had over 60 attendees and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. And our highlight so far? A fabulous drag show at our Berlin office, which was full of glitz and glamour.

  • How do you collaborate with other departments or ERGs across the company?

Christian: PrideUp brings together people from all departments and levels. We work closely with other ERGs and DEI leads, plus we get fantastic support from our leadership and People & Culture teams. This cross-functional approach helps amplify our voice and impact.

  • What’s one moment during your time leading the ERG that made you especially proud?

Christian: Honestly, seeing colleagues come forward with their own ideas and passion. It’s not something they have to do; it’s something they want to be part of. That genuine energy is incredibly inspiring.

  • How has being part of this ERG shaped your experience at Productsup?

Christian: To me, a workplace is about more than just fulfilling your job description. The support we've received for our activities has deepened my sense of belonging within the company and with my colleagues. The connections we've built across departments and global offices have often turned into real friendships.

Celebrating Pride Month

  • What does Pride Month mean to you?

Christian: I think it’s both powerful and necessary to have dedicated moments like Christopher Street Day, or an entire month, to celebrate Pride. But it's also about raising awareness of the challenges that persist or are resurfacing. We live in a time where progress can be undone, and the rights we've fought for shouldn’t be taken for granted.

  • Why should companies recognize Pride Month?

Christian: It’s crucial that companies truly live the values Pride Month represents. We've all seen examples of "pinkwashing" where companies jump on the DEI bandwagon just for show. But when businesses stand firm in their commitment, even when it’s not popular or easy, they can influence real change, including at the policy level. That’s the kind of impact that matters.

Prioritizing education and advocacy

  • What challenges still exist for LGBTQ+ employees in the workplace?

Christian: I see two main areas. In countries with more progressive legislation, people sometimes question the need for LGBTQ+ initiatives: “Don’t you already have equal rights?” But we can’t take these rights for granted, as things can change quickly. Even in these environments, we still need to foster more diverse teams and raise awareness of ongoing challenges. A simple act like adding pronouns to your profile can go a long way toward inclusivity. In countries where LGBTQ+ rights are limited, we still have a long road ahead. Facilitating dialogue between regions can help spark change, even if it starts with small steps.

  • How can allies support LGBTQ+ colleagues at work?

Christian: Start small. Simply by subscribing to ERG newsletters, joining Slack channels, attending events, or webinars. If you can, volunteer your time or skills. Active engagement, no matter how small, makes a difference. What advice would you give to someone starting an ERG? Christian: Don’t try to do it alone. Find people who share your vision. Apart from the above-mentioned small steps, getting buy-in from leadership early on also helps raise visibility and drive momentum.

Looking ahead

  • What’s your vision for the future of PrideUp?

Christian: We’ve come far, but there’s more to do. I’d love to see us walk in Pride parades as a team and continue building awareness across all dimensions of DEI, not just LGBTQ+ topics.

  • Any final message for Pride Month?

Christian: Happy Pride Month! Let’s use this time to reflect on the progress we’ve made and renew our commitment to creating a workplace where everyone feels safe and empowered to be their authentic selves. Our diversity makes us stronger, and when we embrace it, we thrive together.

And that’s a wrap on our chat with Christian!

It’s really inspiring to see how much dedication there is to creating an inclusive space where everyone can be their true selves. Pride isn’t just one month—it’s about speaking up, standing against discrimination, and making sure everyone feels respected. Being an ally means living those values every day. Let’s keep the conversation going, support each other, and build a workplace where everyone feels proud to be exactly who they are.
